A legendary tale from County Durham where a young knight named John Lambton skips church to go fishing in the River Wear. He catches an eel-like creature with a salamander’s head. Lambton is afraid of the creature and, believing he has caught a Devil, he throws it away in a drain or well and shortly afterwards leaves to serve on the Crusades. With time the worm grows and soon villagers begin to notice their livestock are going missing then lo! The fully-grown beast emerges and it is enormous, so big it coils itself around a hill. In some accounts it is Penshaw Hill but the ‘favourite’ is Worm Hill in Fatfield where it is said the marks of the worm’s seven coils around the hill may still be seen.
